Students to showcase their Integrated Product Design Lab projects Nov. 28

Nov. 24, 2005 – NC State students in the Integrated Product Design (IPD) Lab course – including students in the colleges of management, design and textiles  will be showcasing their fall semester projects at a poster session on Monday, Nov. 28, 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the College of Management<> Student Commons area, second floor of Nelson Hall on NC State’s main campus [note: this is a change of venue from an earlier announcement].This is an opportunity to learn about the IPD Lab and to see the poster and prototype displays representing the students. semester-long corporate-sponsored projects. Project sponsors this year include Progress Energy, Advanced Energy (a non-profit agency located on Centennial Campus), WakeMed, and Bugatti, an Italian housewares firm.

This interdisciplinary course is part of the innovation management (IM) concentration in the College of Management’s MBA program. It also is part of the College of Design’s graduate-level Industrial Design program. and the College of Textile’s undergraduate senior design sequence for undergrad textile engineers majors. The course also is open to graduate students in other technical programs.

Instructors include professors Mitzi Montoya-Weiss and John McCreery in the College of Management, as well Professor Haig Khachatoorian in Industrial Design and Professor Tim Clapp in Textile Engineering. The backbone of the IM program is an emphasis on cross-functional, end-to-end product development and the integrated systems perspectives needed to conceive, create, launch, and support innovative solutions. One of this semester’s student projects was mentioned in a recent News & Observer article about an automated method of finding power line disturbances invented by a Progress Energy engineer. The student team is helping the company estimate the commercial value of various product solutions.

The student project display is open to the NC State university community and the business community, including current and prospective sponsors and those interested in learning more about the IPD Lab.
