William Kentridge, Charcoal Animation
Charcoal animation technique built upon previous layers of imagery creating an unsettling sense of haunted history and lost memory.
As the story progresses, the image is altered, and some sections are erased, while others are covered, and new objects appear. The result is that each new frame contains traces of its past, and each new object metamorphoses from old landscapes. This animation retained somewhat through a living storyboard which allows great freedom in developing the concepts of history, memory, loss, and renewal.
Some of William Kentridge’s works are currently part of the collection of The Legacy Project. The goal of the legacy project is to artistically document the historical tragedies of the 20th century through scholarly research and innovative presentation of newly created frameworks of cultural expression.
