Tim Matney, Lecture + Workshop

All College of Design students and faculty are invited to presentations by artist and designer Tim Matney (Digital Matte Painter, Compositor, Concept Artist) on April 1st in Burns Auditorium. Tim Matney has 15 years of experience working in visual effects from games to feature films.

Tim Matney is a 3D generalist that specializes in digital matte painting. He has worked with several visual effects studio including Psyop, Imaginary Forces, Motion Theory, Digital Domain, and Rhythm and Hues. He has also worked in production on a range of feature films including Benjamin Button, Quantum of Solace, The Transformers, and Percy Jackson and the Olympians. He will be presenting two lectures, reviewing portfolios, and directing a 2-day matte painting workshop, which are described below.

Portfolio Reviews: Friday, April 1st
10:00 AM – 12 PM Session for Portfolio Reviews  – Advanced Media Lab
Tim Matney will be reviewing portfolios in the Advanced Media Lab (in Brooks 109) at 10:00 am  on April 1st. Students are encouraged to share their work which may include modeling, animation, illustration, and concept art.

Lectures: Friday, April 1st
1:30 – 3:30 PM Professional Practices Lecture – Burns Auditorium
4:00 – 5:00 PM Matte Painting/ VFX Lecture – Burns Auditorium
The first lecture will focus on professional practices in visual effects. It will give an overview of getting a job in visual effects and advice on planning your career path.
The second will give an introduction to matte painting and workflow within a VFX studio by discussing the how a shot in a feature film goes from script to final print and arrives at your local theater.
Matte Painting Workshop: Saturday and Sunday, April 2-3
10:00 – 4:00 Matte Painting Workshop – Advanced Media Lab
On Saturday and Sunday, he will be directing a 2-day intensive digital matte painting workshop. In this workshop he will be doing live demonstrations. This workshop is specifically for students who have had digital painting experience in Adobe Photoshop and have proficiency in After Effects. Students will be working on a production schedule to complete a matte painting and incorporate it into a moving HD shot.
