This is a running document for students taking <a title=\"Universal By Design\" href=\"http:\/\/deimos.apple.com\/WebObjects\/Core.woa\/Browse\/ncsu.edu.1856237855\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Universal by Design<\/strong><\/a> (<em>iTunes Link<\/em>) through <a title=\"CUD\" href=\"http:\/\/www.design.ncsu.edu\/cud\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Center for Universal Design<\/a> at\u00c2\u00a0 NC State University, College of Design.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em><strong>Audio and Video Capture<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Get good audio. <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Garbage in = Garbage out&#8230; Cleaning up scratchy, muffled, inaudible audio is next to impossible.<\/li>\n<li>Use an external microphone if you can (even better, wireless lavaliere)<br \/>\nOtherwise &#8212; make sure the camera is close to the subject speaking.<\/li>\n<li>Pay close attention to background noise that may interfere with dialogue.<\/li>\n<li>Bring a pair of headphones so you can sample the incoming audio signal from the camera microphone output<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Video<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Shoot in standard definition when possible<br \/>\n&#8211; Although some video services are accepting HD footage the majority of what you will be producing will be just as visually compelling online<\/li>\n<li>Sometimes smaller is better (camera size)<\/li>\n<li>Tape is cheap. Time and opportunity are not.<br \/>\n&#8211; If you&#8217;re using SD or Hard Drive based cameras be sure to allocate tape sessions appropriately so you don&#8217;t run out of drive space during a shoot<\/li>\n<li>Tape provides an instant archive &#8211; swap, label, shoot, repeat.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t store projects on IT lab machines.<br \/>\n&#8211; Purchase a good external Firewire or USB2.0 hard drive, 500GB minimum<\/li>\n<li>Use a tripod to avoid the Blair Witch\/Cloverfield look<br \/>\n&#8211; unless you are going for that sort of visual style<\/li>\n<li>Pretend that the zoom lens was never invented<br \/>\n&#8211; you can get better footage if you cover a wide shot and then a close up without awkward zooming<\/li>\n<li>Shoot cover footage (ambient)<\/li>\n<li>Trust your eyes over auto-focus.<\/li>\n<li>Pay attention to lighting (color, amount)<br \/>\n&#8211; check your camera settings for indoor vs outdoor lighting settings it can make a big difference to skin tone and environmental colors<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t point directly at a light source.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>Plan in advance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Outline visually (storyboard). Don&#8217;t worry if you can&#8217;t draw. Keep it simple.<\/li>\n<li>Script as much as you can. It will help you structure time.<\/li>\n<li>Do as much as you can in one shoot at a location. Don&#8217;t plan on coming back.<\/li>\n<li>Talk with your talent.
