North Carolina State University is a long way from Hollywood, but one Wolfpack alumnus is leaving his mark on tinsel town.

College of Design graduate (1998) Matt Checkowski screened his directorial debut film, Sony Pictures’ Lies and Alibis, on campus in November. He is being featured in the second of three university ads that will air during halftime of televised basketball games this season.

Prior to co-directing Lies and Alibis, Checkowski was best known for his work with director Steven Spielberg. Checkowski and his directing partner, Kurt Mattila, created the dream sequences for Spielberg’s acclaimed science fiction film Minority Report, starring Tom Cruise and Samantha Morton. More recently, Checkowski has worked on designing new opening sequences and a new look for ESPN’s Monday Night Football.

The halftime ads focus on the value of an NC State education. The idea grew from the introduction last spring of NC State’s Pack Promise student success plan. Pack Promise will provide for 100 percent of the financial aid needs for new freshman from families whose income is at or below 150 percent of poverty level. But, more than financial aid, Pack Promise is a plan for student success, delivering additional academic support and advising, mentoring and work-study jobs connected to undergraduate research.

The first spot featured Amy Stallings, a pediatric resident at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk, Va. The third ad will feature Dwight Williams, chief engineer and principal nuclear physicist with the Department of Defense.
