Study the theory and process of designing computer games!

A new class is available in the Fall of 2012 that design undergraduates may find of interest: CSC281: Foundations of Interactive Game Design. Â The class covers issues involved in the design of video games from technical, cultural, social and narrative perspectives. This course should appeal to a broad range of students.

As of Fall 2012, this course fulfills a NCSU General Education Program (GEP) Interdisciplinary Perspectives requirement. It also fulfills the CSC Games Concentration other elective requirement as well as a CSC general BS in Computer Science other elective requirement.

No experience with computer programming is required for this course.

This course focuses on the design of the user experience in computer games — from their rules and simulated worlds to their stories and social experiences. Students in the course will study the design of significant existing commercial games (Skyrim, Mass Effect 3, Minecraft and many others) for both PC and console. Readings will include work by influential game designers and game studies theorists. Lectures are designed to invite student discussion. The course will teach the use of an introductory game development environment called Game Maker, targeted at non-programmers. The course will also provide a place to discuss design ideas, game analysis concepts, and related subjects. No programming experience is necessary and the class is designed to be accessible to students from all colleges and disciplines.

The course is taught by Dr. R. Michael Young. The course syllabus for Fall 2011 can be found here. The syllabus for 2012 will be very similar, but isn’t updated yet to reflect the different dates for the upcoming term. It will be posted here as soon as it’s available.

Course time and location: Course is taught during the Fall 2012 semester on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:10AM to 10:00AMÂ in Daniels Hall room 434.

Michael’s office hours for Fall 2012 are Tuesdays from 10AM to 10:50AM in EB2 Room 2258 or by appointment.

Where: Campus Cinema in Witherspoon at 7pm.

Gary will do a Q&A after, and the event will be free and open to the public.

This is a great opportunity for College of Design students to meet Gary as he has really pioneered a thematic, style, and original distribution system for his films that speaks to what I suspect many design students aspire to do in their own work.

About the Director

Gary Hustwit is an independent filmmaker based in New York and London. He has produced six feature documentaries, including I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, the award-winning film about the band Wilco; Moog, the documentary about electronic music pioneer Robert Moog; and Drive Well, Sleep Carefully, a tour film about the band Death Cab for Cutie. Hustwit worked with punk label SST Records in the late-1980s, ran the independent book publishing house Incommunicado Press during the 1990s, was Vice President of the media website Salon.com in 2000, and started the indie DVD label Plexifilm in 2001.

Hustwit made his directorial debut with Helvetica, which had its world premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival in March 2007, and has since screened in over 200 cities worldwide. It had its television premiere in the UK on BBC1, and will be broadcast in the United States on PBS in January 2009. Hustwit was nominated for the 2008 Independent Spirit “Truer Than Fiction” Award for Helvetica.
